A very productive day

I took a day off since I was feeling very weak and sick.

But I didn’t feel like sitting or lying down. That would make me feel sicker. So I started to to program. I am glad I did it.

I setup an open source project in code.google. I updated the source code there (of course I did mess up a bit; trying to clean now).

FOW has come up well in .NET. I’ve completed all the programming part of it. Now have to start to create styles. Will do it in the coming days.

A photo blog in development

I’ve been looking at different options to improve my photography.

One key factor is to know the different parameters of the photos taken. I couldn’t find any easy way of doing that. One way is to have a photo blog.

At the same time, I also wanted to improve my programming skills.

So I decided to develop one on my own. I’m developing one in Django framework. Hopefully in 3 months, I can have it done well.

Good progress in FOW development

I am pretty glad that I made good progress in FOW development. I need to capture sample shots for preview images. I have created an account with SourceForge. But so far, have not been successful in transferring files. Hopefully I will be able to crake it in few days. Then I’ll release FOW opensource 0.1 version.

This is a stripped-down version of fow2.0. I have concentrated to port the code to Python. Once this is done, I will go on adding more features (hopefully).

Stuck on templating

In the earlier version of FOW, I used xml/xsl for HTML templating. As much as fun it was to learn XSL, I find it hard to create new templates. Also, since I am using Python (I didn’t say this before, right? ), I thought of using some python template engine rather than xml/xsl. But there are so much of these engines, it is difficult to choose. I like a clean templating engine; with an ability of simple programming. I am swinging between different templates. Hope I make a choice quickly and come up to speed.

FOW is near to be open-sourced

I’ve always wanted to make FOW, an open source. I was bit shy of making my crapy coding style open to be seen for the world.

I’m porting FOW to wxPython from wxC++. There are two reasons, it is quicker to code in Python than in C++ and also I wanted to learn Python. At my age, it makes sense to code in Python than in C++ (actually in India, at my age not many IT folks code! ).

I’ve coded the UI part. I’ve also selected the templating engine (I decided not to use XML/XSL). Coding of logic. Since I get to code only during the weekend, it takes its own sweet time. Hopefully in few more weeks, I make all of it ready. I’ve arleady created an account in sourceforge. I’m excited to jump into open-source area.

Restarting FOW development

I’m planning to restart the development of FOW. Earlier it was written in C++. But now it will be in wxPython, for the ease of programming. Why WxPython? Well, if Eric and OSAF choses wxPython, why not me? This category should list the progress that I make in developing FOW. BTW, I’ve also decided to make it an open source software. So my design/coding should reflect that. I should be able to release the first version in couple of months (targeting to release first version before 3 months)

FOW would be in a Belgian magazine

When I checked my mails today, I got this one:

Hello,

I’m Johan Vandecasteele, marketing manager of Belgium’s leading computer consumer magazines Clickx Magazine and PC Magazine. We are including a free cover mount dvd with our Clickx Magazine n° 100 (August 23 2005), and we would like to include Fotos on Web on that dvd. Can you please tell us if we can have your permission to do so. Please visit our website www.clickxmagazine.be for information on our magazine.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Kind regards,

Johan Vandecasteele

FOW is already published in PC Mag of Greece & Italy. It is also in few of the e-mags. Should I even say, I feel pretty flattered?

For those who don’t know, this is a photo album generating tool that I wrote. It is a cross-platform application that runs natively in both Linux & Windows.
