On the off-beaten path

After enjoying the well trodden tourist path, we decided to go where others don’t go usually. The whole day we were passing through woods and being with unspoilt nature. Each of us were saying, “Wow! we never knew such places exist in our region”. All of these places became known to public after series of Tamil movie shootings here.

To start we walked down a pine forest region to reach a lake. There is no boating, no shops, no crowd, just the lake surrounded by green mountain ranges and some cows. We thought we found a great place. The driver told us to wait for the next.

Ofcourse to find something great you need to exert sweat, even in the cold climate. We did so when we walked up to a place called 9th mile. I don’t know the reason behind the name. But it is worth walking up. There is nothing but lush vegetation everywhere you see. The mountain range at the background makes it even more romantic.

When we got to Pykara waterfalls, we learnt that there is not much water there. Actually my sister was very much eager to see the ‘Nilgris Niagara’. But still we wanted to walk there to see how it looks without water. Good that we walked there. There was no waterfalls, but it wasn’t disappointing. It looked like we were in a canyon. We took lots and lots of pictures.

The only disappointing trip was to Pykara boat house. It wasn’t worth walking for an hour. Still, we were walking through the forest and so we did enjoy the walk, up and down.
Wasn’t it time to return? No, we still had Glenmorgan. There is a power station which lies between the mountains and a winch to get there, but we should have gotten the permission and we didn’t. But no worry, even without the winch it was a gorgeous view. We were surrounded by layers of mountain ranges and beneth us stood the thick, dense forest. We couldn’t have asked for more.

With a complete satisfaction, we drove back to Ooty. Still we cannot believe what we saw. We are still bewildered.

Our legs need rest, off we go for rest. Goodnight.

Ooty & Coonoor

We started out after a breakfast at the hotel. We headed straight to Dodapetta peak, which at 2623 mts is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu. From here there is a wonderful panoramic view of the city.

On the way to Coonoor, we stopped in a Tea estate. We had an explanation of how tea is prepared from the leaves and tasted three different types of tea. The first three quality of tea is exported abroad and only the last quality comes into India.

Then we went to Sim’s park, a botanical garden which containts various varieties of plants. One such tree was planted way back in 1850. Sim’s park has a better view than the botanical garden at Ooty.

Next stop was Dolphin Nose, named for the shape of the rock. From here one can view St. Catherine falls. We also stopped by Lamb’s rock, named after an Englishman. One can have a good view of Coimbatore plains, Mettupalayam, Mountain train tracks.

After lunch, we came back to Ooty for a boat ride. The artificial lake was constructed in 1824 by Mr. John Sullivan, the then Collector of Coimbatore, who located and constructed the early settlements of British Raj in Ooty.

Ooty was the only tourist place known to us when we grew up. From School trips to Honeymoon trips every one goes to Ooty. For such a place which has been in the attention for decades, it is very tourist-unfriendly. The public transport does not connect all the attractions well. It is better to hire a taxi or go via a tour package. Roads are poorly maintained, but everywhere there is a charge, either as entrance fee or as parking fee. Probably it is true to say that the British Raj was ousted after they laid the infrastructure and the current Indian officials and politicians are enjoying the benefits.

Tuti to Ooty

We decided to spend our New year at Ooty, a well-known hill station in my region which is located at 2250 kms above the sea level. After arriving at Coimbatore in the early morning, I decided to catch the famous mountain train which starts at Mettupalayam at 7.10. I was there at 6.30 and even by that time, people got into the train and took hold of seats. Somehow I got a window seat only to realize that the sceneries are well seen on the other side. The train takes a break every hour thus making the total travel time to 5 hours (from Mettupalayam), whereas by bus it is only 2 hours.

I could picture an India inside the train – overcrowded, yet keep loading, people getting in want a piece of the place by pushing people already in, people already in loathe any new-comer, never minding of all the chaos we all get to the destination.

We didn’t want to do so much on the first day itself. So we just went to Botanical garden, which hosts species from many parts of the globe. I was surprised to know that the garden work started at 1848. It was a relaxed stroll, bullying each other, taking pictures and eating maze.

Now my sister and brother-in-law are working out tomorrow’s plan. We are hiring a car and going to see the highest point in the Nilgri’s mountain range, few gardens and lakes. We expect it to be pretty exciting.

Chirstmas at home

We (my sister, brother-in-law and I) came to my parent’s house for Christmas. My BIL is crazy about fireworks. He bought all sorts of fireworks – single crackers, multiple crackers, saucer kinds and so on. I have not cracked a firecracker since I was 15. So it was partly fun and partly surprising, how someone of my age enjoy crackers so much. Even I cracked few.

I also met one of my college-mate. He is married to a girl from my town and he was here for Christmas. He came to my house for few hours and we were chatting about how our lives changed and also gossiped about few fellow mates. It was a ‘walking down’ of memory lane.

Otherwise it was all reading, eating, watching TV and chitchatting.

Lessons for team-leads

  • A team member will be angry because you shared his glory and will hate you
because you pointed out his fault
  • A TL should know how to, when to, where to use Please, Thank you and F–k
    you
  • A pat at the back is not very far from kick in the ass
  • Everything you say can be and will be used against you
  • If an asshole is on top, you should be prepared for what comes through it
  • Feeding others ego

It has been crazy and busy at office for the past 10 days. Our project’s onsite manager (one who decides who goes to onsite), wanted a tool to help him track the time entered by all the resources. It should read data from the time tracking tool and present in MS-Excel format. One of the team member who wanted to go onsite, convinced the manager that he could do it. Even after three months, he didn’t complete it, but got his dream realized. When I was asked if I could do that task, I took it up without knowing any of this background (as I was new into the team). I discussed with this guy and we came to a conclusion that it would take around 7 days to finish it (I still didn’t know that he took 3 months). Call it betrayal, but this guy informed the manager that it would take only 2 days to complete. I have read jokes about managers being morons, but this is my first encounter with one. Instead of confronting the team member, the manager came back to me questioning my capability. I got pissed off. I wanted to reply in action. I finished it a day before.

A major release fell during the same time line and so I was busy, busy, busy. Once I met the target, I shot out a mail to the team member giving a piece of my mind. Talk about proof of being a moron – the onsite manager sent a mail to my immediate manager that I should apologize for the mail as it had affected the team member’s morale. He didn’t have an ounce of sense to grasp that this guy cheated him for three months and I finished it in a week along with overseeing a major release. I refused to apologize for the content of the mail, rather I said sorry for the tone of the mail. A great company to work for!

    Rectifying horizontal misalignment

In the past two years, I have grown horizontally in body size. And I keep growing day by day. I am not able to get into pants I bought 6 months back. I decided to keep a check on my growth. Our firm has a gym right here in the office building. For long I was shy in using it, but now time has come to take action.

This weekend, I bought whatever is needed. Yesterday I went to the gym. There is a trainer as well. He guided me through warm-ups and other exercises. I worked-out for little more than an hour burning around 150 calories (Are readings on those machines true?). I felt good after the exercise – physically and mentally.

The goal is to get into my old pants for my birthday (good self-gift?) which is coming in another 6 months. Wish me good luck.

    On a shopping spree

It is that time of the year to gratify the urge to dress up – going shop to shop, looking at new designs, checking the price against money in the pocket, and end up giving into temptation to add that piece of cloth to our wardrobe. We (my sister, brother-in-law, and I) were on a shopping tour this weekend. My BIL always said that it was difficult to go shopping with my sister. Now I witnessed it. While we were looking at Jeans and T-shirts, she would sneak out for a whirlwind trip of the shop, but when she was buying, we had to stand next to her until she finalizes her choice, which could be eternity in a man’s timeline. But it was fun hearing all the excuses and reasoning of her why she rejects one and buys another.

I bought two churithars for her and a T-Shirt for my BIL and they bought me a jeans. Added to that was a long list of individual shopping. We swiped cards and wiped our bank balance.

    Favorites of tinsel world meet

As an ambassador for AIDS prevention, Richard Gere is in Chennai. And he met with Rajinikanth, the super star of Tamil movie world. Richard Gere, who strongly believes celebrities putting their stamp on the noble causes, is touring India to raise awareness about AIDS prevention. The message is: AIDS is not a death sentence, you can live successfully with it.

    Sitting late

Good thing, I am integrating into the team; bad thing, I have to stay late in the nights and come back early. Like today, we had meetings with the client for clarifying few issues. We had series of meetings starting at 23h00 our time, ending at around 01h00. I will go home, have a quick and short sleep and then will have to return for a weekly status meeting tomorrow at 11h00. In all these 8 years of IT experience, I somehow was free from such late night sittings. But now I can understand more clearly the plight of Indian software guys.
